Abstract

A formal definition of concepts for defining entities and relationships of interest in an information systems application project is proposed. Entities of interest to the systems designer are partitioned in four subsets: phenomena which exist independently of the information system, datatypes, information objects, processing functions. The paper deals with concepts for specification of phenomenon structures in particular. The problems of integrating different applications are discussed from the point of view of integrating the discourse systems of the applications in question. An example is provided for showing how databases of different applications can be compared with regard to semantical equivalence.
